/ THE WORK

TWIST AND SHOUT, 2001
Portuguese pink marble and “Raggio di Luna” (leopard stone) marble

Barab’s special interest in marble and the opportunity to work with landscape designers to create works that combine nature and sculpture is clearly visible in Twist and Shout. This work is a sculpture divided into two distinct parts, two undulating columns, the tallest in Portuguese pink marble, the other in Turkish “Raggio di Luna” (leopard stone) marble, a material which takes its name from the fact that the internal spots of pigment, if sculpted with a particular inclination and at a certain depth, create a striated surface. Both sculptures rest on a natural base of moss and thyme and are made from large, grained marble crystals that shine spontaneously in the sunlight. The contrast between the sculptures and the surrounding nature, in all seasons, is reflected by the different colours and the movement of the columns in a sensual “dance” recalls the famous Beatles song.
