/ THE WORK
Island, 2000
bronze
This sculpture is part of a series started by the South Korean artist Kim Hae Won in 1980: gradually the representation of the female figure becomes horizontal rather than vertical and, at the same time, more abstract thanks to the use of rounded bronze shapes. The reclining female figure, moreover, has represented a constant subject in Western art since the Renaissance, acting both as a mythical divinity and as a symbol of irrational nature.
Inverting, as if in a paradox, the geographical meaning of the island, described as a metaphor for a tranquil oasis, in this case Island clearly resonates with the experience of the Park itself.
Island was the first sculpture installed in the Park, in 2000.
