The Paris Opera. One of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Guillaume Diop has just been named Étoile. It is the first time in the history of this jewel of French culture that a black dancer has received such recognition. From one day to the next, he becomes the darling of the media. From the orchestra pit, Sullivan Loiseau, double bass player, plays The Nutcracker. She is the first black musician to join the Paris Opera orchestra. In an ideal world, all that should matter is their exceptional talent. In reality, the color of their skin is still a matter of debate. Symbols, role models for some, alibis for diversity for others, they are followed for a season at the Opéra, as the venerable institution seeks to embrace diversity.
What is African Diaspora Cinema Festival?
ADCF is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting black stories and images through the exhibition of film, visual arts and other creative expressions. Since 2013, the African Diaspora Cinema Festival (ADCF) has become an international reference point for the film and artistic communities of the African diaspora. The ninth edition of the African Diaspora Cinema Festival will take place from September 3 to 6, 2025. The only film festival in Italy with an African artistic director, the black film and art festival also features live music performances, dance and fashion exhibitions. ADCF screenings and pre-screenings take place each year in different locations: New York University in Florence, Parco Sculture del Chianti, Cinema Giunti Odeon in Florence, Recovery Plan in Florence, Instabile – Culture in Movimento in Florence, Area Verde Camollia in Siena and Cinema Farnese in Rome.
What is ADCF’s Goal?
ADCF’s vision is to raise awareness among the public about African cinema, the diaspora and about Africa, its vast potential and the socio-economic impact it has and can have, not only on African economies, but also on other economic areas. The goal is to use cinema to create a cultural revolution to change the social and economic horizon of Africa, paving the way for the countless amount of films produced in Africa and by filmmakers from the African diaspora
